I love the feel of felt. If you’re looking for a simple activity for travel, something to keep in your handbag, or simply a creative project for home, you can make your own felt boards. Felt sheets are available from discount and craft stores for about a dollar.
Materials
- Felt sheets (various colours)
- Piece of cardboard (I cut a section from a box)
- Scissors
- Glue
Ideas
Below are some ideas on what shapes scenes to make. You can either just cut freehand, or there are heaps of templates on the web which can be traced.
- Shapes: Great for toddlers. Cut shapes of different colours and ask them to find the ‘red triangle’ or ‘blue square’.
- Letters: Cut a variety of letters and make words
- Simple scenes: Think sea, beach, grass etc.
- Dress up: Trace a skin colour body shape and cut clothes for dressing up.
- Flowers: Cut a green stem with a leaf and then different coloured/shaped blooms.
Instructions
1. Cut a section of sturdy cardboard and choose a colour to be the base board. I used black, but white can be a good option too.
2. Glue the base felt pice on the cardboard and trim to size.
3. Cut out the shapes you need and it’s ready to go.
You can also do this in A4 size (example below).
Keep in a zip lock or other bag.
