If you have never made play dough before, it’s so-so easy and something you can whip up with minimal effort. Below is a very non-glamourous video how I make play dough.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 1 cup of plain flour
- 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon oil
- Food colouring (optional)
Instructions
1. Add all ingredients to a saucepan.
2. Stir continuously over medium heat until the mixture balls together. Approximately 4 minutes.
3. Transfer play dough to a floured surface and knead lightly.

Store play dough in an air tight container or in a zip lock bag

Of course there’s the usual way to play with dough, just shape away or cut with cookie cutters. However there are many different ways yon can mix it up. Below is a list of fun way to use play dough.
1. Make Play Dough Kits
This is my favourite way to use play dough. The kids absolutely love it! You can create a kit with items around the house and place in a craft container, or even just set up different items in bowls on a table. Find more ideas here.
2. Nature Landscapes
Collect nature items like sticks, leaves and flowers from the backyard and kids can create structures with their play dough.
3. Squishy Balls
These are addictive! And so easy to make. By stuffing a balloon with play dough, you create a squishy ball. Tutorial here.
4. Play Dough Clothes
Use play dough to create fashion pieces for dolls.
5. Gift Kits
Instead of sweet treats, you can create mini kits to give as a party favour to guests. More tips here.

Add a few drops of essential oil to your play dough mixture for beautifully scented dough.
