I went on a test drive in a Ford Everest on the Lahars of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, and it was amazing. Since returning home to Australia, I’ve been thinking about how I could turn my experience into inspired play for my car-crazy son. So we set up a temporary sand pit in an underbed storage container, added a few rocks, a plank of wood and water. He LOVED it! Was such much fun. Take a look at the video below to see how the off-roading experience inspired this set up.
Materials
- Underbed storage container
- Play sand (you can get this from places like Bunnings. I used 2 bags but you could get away with 1)
- Water
- Rocks or pebbles
- Plank of wood (I used light craft wood called Balsa Wood you can get from Bunnings, Spotlight, Eckersley’s etc. for a few dollars)
- Toy Cars (the car my son is using is a Ford Escape SUV toy by Welly but any toy cars are great for this activity like matchbox etc.)
- Shaving cream (optional)
Set up
Empty the sand into the underbed storage container. That’s as simple as it needs to be! However you can also add water, rocks and shaving cream as we did. The good thing about this set up, is you can cover it up with the lid, and then use it again, and again! Tip: if water is used, just leave in the sun for a little to dry, fluff it up and play again.
Play on.
